Esik, IssykWould you like to help me keep this page updated? I am unable to double-check the links and search for new sites as often as I would like. Just E-mail me "Esik is a small and very cold lake in the mountains around Almaty. People in the area still remember the disaster of the 1960's, when a poorly-designed Soviet mine shaft caused a portion of a mountain to collapse into the lake. The flooding that happened as a result caused many deaths. Today, Esik is a popular destination for vacations and camping." From Kzchat Esik is the location of the Scythian burial mound where the "gold man" was found. This is a warrior's costume made up of over 4,000 gold pieces. "Amongst arrow shaped motifs, birds and snow leopards are winged mythical beasts and antelope - all finely worked in purest gold." A few pieces are on display at the Archaeological Museum in Almaty.
