Esik, Issyk

"Esik is a small and very cold lake in the mountains around Almaty. People in the area still remember the disaster of the 1960's, when a poorly-designed Soviet mine shaft caused a portion of a mountain to collapse into the lake. The flooding that happened as a result caused many deaths. Today, Esik is a popular destination for vacations and camping." From Kzchat [external link]. This site also has one photo.

Esik is the location of the Scythian burial mound where the "gold man" was found. This is a warrior's costume made up of over 4,000 gold pieces. "Amongst arrow shaped motifs, birds and snow leopards are winged mythical beasts and antelope - all finely worked in purest gold." A few pieces are on display at the Archaeological Museum in Almaty.

Jeff [external link], a Peace Corp volunteer, went to Esik and took a few pictures of the area where "The Gold Man" was found.

There is an Issyk-Kul Lake across the Tien Shan mountains in Kyrgyzstan. It is a large lake fed by hot springs.

The Peace Corp hang out is the Cafe Victoria. Since Esik is a training site, many of the Peace Corp websites listed on the Personal pages will have information about the city.

Falling Rain [external link] has maps and current weather conditions (temperature, cloud cover and precipitation).
